The Association of Progressive Rental Organizations (APRO) is America’s only national trade association for the rent-to-own (RTO) industry. Founded in 1980, APRO advocates for and supports the interests of over 300 organization members with over 6,000 individual stores across the country.

The Challenge

APRO had recently invested in a learning management system as part of its plan to offer professional development to its members. As the organization’s first step into online learning, the team needed courses to launch the platform and introduce digital training to an industry that has traditionally relied on on-the-job training.

Designing learning for the realities of store work

Rent-to-own stores typically operate with small teams where employees handle multiple responsibilities, from sales and customer service to account management and delivery coordination. They spent much of their day working directly with customers on the store floor, so training needed to fit into short periods of time rather than require long sessions.

Given these demands, a microlearning format offered the most practical solution. The courses, structured as 15-minute modules, keep each lesson focused on a specific skill or concept. Employees can immediately apply what they learn without being pulled away from their core responsibilities.

Making learning relevant across roles

In rent-to-own stores, employees’ responsibilities often change depending on their role and experience. For instance, sales associates, account managers, delivery drivers, and store managers may interact with customers and rental agreements differently.

To ensure the training served all employees, the courses addressed core situations commonly encountered in store operations. This practical focus made the material relevant to employees at any stage of their careers and supported ongoing professional development.

Developing course content collaboratively

Starting with content from APRO’s first micro-course, eLearningDOC collaborated closely with APRO’s subject matter experts to develop the remaining courses. Together, the teams refined the material to fit the microlearning format and ensure lessons reflected authentic day-to-day store situations.

The program reaches a broad, distributed workforce across thousands of rent-to-own locations, creating a consistent learning experience regardless of store size or geography. Designed for a workforce with varied educational backgrounds, the courses supported a clear understanding without requiring prior formal training.

The courses also resonated within a workforce that values long-term growth. Employees viewed the training as a clear path toward earning credentials that support advancement. This connection between learning and career progression strengthened engagement and positioned the program as a practical tool for both individual development and organizational stability.
