Austin Association of Facility & Maintenance Engineers is a membership-based organization serving professionals responsible for the operation and maintenance of complex facilities. Their education programs are designed to support both new and experienced practitioners through practical, role-relevant learning that reflects real working conditions.
AAFAME’s Building Engineers training was built on in-person instruction led by experienced subject matter experts and optimized for live facilitation. As AAFAME looked to expand the program’s reach and explore digital solutions, the challenge was not simply moving content online but preserving the depth of expert-led instruction while making it usable across different learning formats and scalable over time.
The training book itself had been in development for several years prior to AAFAME partnering with eLearningDOC. While subject matter expertise was available, converting that expertise into a cohesive instructional format proved challenging. Early attempts—including the use of AI to generate draft content—successfully captured large amounts of information, but resulted primarily in rule-based or checklist-style materials. Turning this information into a learning experience required instructional judgment: deciding how concepts should be sequenced, where additional context was needed, and how learners would encounter and apply the material in real work situations.
AAFAME partnered with eLearningDOC to transform expert-led, in-person training content into a structured, scalable digital learning experience that prepares entry-level building engineers for real-world work.
The BE Ready Training eBook, was developed in collaboration with AAFAME’s subject matter experts and eLearningDOC’s in-house instructional designer with domain expertise, enabling expert knowledge to be shaped into a learner-ready experience that supports multiple learning formats.
Expert trainer notes and facilitation materials were organized into a logical progression, translating experiential knowledge into a format suitable for consistent digital use.
Content was written with entry-level learners in mind, helping them become comfortable with the professional language and terminology they would encounter on the job.
The learning experience was structured to help learners connect concepts to workplace situations, reinforcing relevance and supporting on-the-job readiness rather than passive reading.
The eBook was intentionally designed as both a standalone learning resource and a foundation for future digital learning, enabling a second phase in which the content can be expanded into structured eLearning modules for online use.
AAFAME now has a flexible, scalable learning asset that supports multiple use cases, including independent learner access, facilitated instruction, and both offline and online delivery, and a clear learning platform choice informed by usability, accessibility, scalability, and integration needs.
SME expertise is preserved and extended beyond live facilitation. Practical knowledge originally shared in in-person sessions is captured in a structured format that reflects real working conditions, allowing expert insights to reach a broader audience without loss of depth or credibility.
Learners have access to a structured learning resource that clearly explains complex concepts and professional terminology, helping them understand how expert knowledge translates into day-to-day work and providing a clear introduction to the building engineer role, including expectations, responsibilities, and career pathways.
Our partners at AAFAME shared that there is currently no comparable training resource in the industry that captures Building Engineers’ instruction as an eBook in this scope.
The BE Ready Training eBook has laid the foundation for scaling future digital learning programs across multiple platforms. Structured eLearning courses are now in development, transforming the content into scalable online learning experiences designed to meet learners where they are, giving them flexible access, self-paced progress, and practical tools they can apply immediately in their work settings.
